Lecture »Political in the performative«

 Jure Novak and Jurij Krpan

15th March2012 4 PM, Gallery Kapelica, Kersnikova 4

At the lecture we have been looking into connections between the political and performative in the classical drama theatre and in the modern scenic art. Jurij Krpan, director of the Gallery Kapelica, and Jure Novak, former artistic director of the Theatre Glej have presented their viewpoints and experiences. They have also answered questions about the possibility of political activities in the context of the scenic arts. They have touched upon some well known examples from Slovenia and from abroad and exposed their own experience. They have given answers to questions such as: is it possible to be political through a performative artistic expression? What can be subversive, thinking art which encourages action? How can an artist or a programmer answer these questions?

Jure Novak is a theatre director, performer, singer and translator. From 2007 until 2010 he was the artistic manager of the Theatre Glej in Ljubljana. Among his latest projects are Iz Principa (agit-prop musical about Gavrilo Princip), V imenu ljudstva (about the censorship in the Slovenian art) and Jure Novak: Zato sem srečen (about the imperative of happiness and depression).

Jurij Krpan is the director and curator of the Gallery Kapelica in Ljubljana. The gallery focuses on researching art and has organized many international installations and performances. Krpan hold lectures across Europe and believes that art is the evil of culture.

The lecture has been implemented within the educational programs of Global SOFA / Ekvilib Institute. The discussion was fallowed by an informative lecture about the programs, contente and possibillities for cooperation at the Global SOFA (www.sofaglobal.org).

Creative Caravan is a program of multicultural connection of young artists from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe.

Within the program each year we will host artistic groups comprised of young people with vulnerable socio-economic backgrounds. With help of art centers in their countries they learn how to use art for expressing themselves, for the development of their self-consciousness and for improvement of their social inclusion.

Within the framework of the European tour, the artistic groups are performing and holding artistic workshops. Through direct interaction with their European peers they use art to present their everyday lives and their vision for a better future. They furthermore encourage intercultural cooperation of young people, better respect for others and their opinions and also respect for choices of every individual. The artistic groups also present innovative and creative ways and strategies for better social integration. This youth activity facilitates the active role of young people and allows them to establish their own relationship to the issues other members of their generation across the world are facing.

In May 2012 we will host an artistic group Shangilia which comes from Nairobi in Kenya and facilitates active integration of street children.
